Thanks to the Prahran Mission, the students of Whitehouse Institute of Design, MC's Philip Boon and Jenny Bannister, the wonderful designers and volunteers for a wonderful night which helped raise much needed funds for the tireless work of the Prahran Mission.

Fashion Event - Mission 65 Part 1

Last night Prahran Mission celebrated its 65th birthday in style, with the sold-out 40's themed Mission 65 event at Red Bennies in South Yarra. Attendees were taken back to the 1940's with live jazz by the Victorian Jazz Club who kindly sponsored a band for the evening. 

The night's stylish hosts, Philip Boon and Jenny Bannister entertained the crowd as they described the fantastic designs created especially to be auctioned off, by some of Melbourne's most talented designers including Dean Hewitt and JC Lloyd-Southwell d'Anvers from Madam Virtue, Anthony Capon, Kara Baker, Candice DeVille, Leopold and Clemente Talarico, as well as students from Whitehouse Institute of Design who helped put together this fantastic evening.

General Manager of the Prahran Mission, Erica Myers-Davis spoke about the work of the Prahran Mission, which supports the community through initiatives such as providing basic food and mental health rehabilitation and counselling to people in crisis. With all the proceeds from the night going to the valuable work of the Prahran Mission, Mission 65 was not only a great night of fun and fashion, but reminded the community to consider and support those less fortunate.

Mission 65 - Interview with Philip Boon

Last week I did a post on Mission 65, a fantastic charity event which aims to raise money for the tireless work of the Prahran Mission.

I was lucky enough to interview one of Australia's most successful stylists Philip Boon, who has played an integral role in the planning of this fundraising event. Philip will also be co-presenting on the night with Australian fashion legend Jenny Bannister.

1. Why did you decide to become involved with Mission 65?

My close friend Erica Myers Davis is the General Manager of Fundraising at Prahran Mission and ten years ago she asked me to style a fashion show for the Mission, she asked me again and it was great to be involved, this time with a different theme.

2. You came up with the great concept to involve students from the Whitehouse with the planning of Mission 65. How do you think this practical experience will benefit them in the future.

My 3rd year Styling students at Whitehouse had to create an event for this semester and I thought what better way to get experience with working with a major client than to work together on a fashion show that is actually for a charity and a great cause. The experience that they will have and the rewarding nature of the job I hope will give them an experience they would need to have worked in the industry for years to get.

3. What is your role in the organisation of Mission 65?

Project Manager/Style Director

4. Why do you think it is important for the community to support Mission 65 and the Prahran Mission?

Prahran Mission doesn't get any government funding like many other charities and they have worked with displaced people, some with mental health issues for 65 years, a subject that not many people want to talk about let alone care for. Considering that one in three people in Australia will have mental health issues at some time in their life I think they deserve more than our money, they need our support.

Mission 65 Fashion Event - Preview

Something old, something new, we’ve made a difference, now so can you.

For 65 years, the Prahran Mission has been providing support and guidance to those less fortunate. The tireless work of their volunteers has helped thousands of people achieve a better quality of life. We as the community, now have a chance to give something back to an organisation that has given so much.

On 1 June 2011, you are invited to attend a special fashion event put together by third year students from the Whitehouse Institute of Design and volunteers, to celebrate the work of the Prahran Mission. 

The brainchild of celebrity stylist Philip Boon, the Mission 65 event will draw from the glamour of the 1940s. Some of Melbourne’s most established and talented fashion designers, including Jenny Bannister, Anthony Capon and the wonderful JC Lloyd-Southwell d’Anvers and Dean Hewitt from Madam Virtue, will be taking pieces sourced from Mission opportunity shops and re-creating them as haute couture pieces.

After being presented in a live runway show, these beautiful pieces will be auctioned off, with all proceeds from the designs and ticket sales going to the Prahran Mission.

Designers JC Lloyd-Southwell d’Anvers and Dean Hewitt, have encouraged as many people as possible to attend: “It is important that we take the time to give back to the community. We should show our support to organisations such as the Prahran Mission, who train and educate people to get back into the workforce and enable them to remain part of the community at-large.”
